CRU VII Weaving life

Urban Regeneration Ceramic Contest CRU VII

The proposal aims to develop a real environmental and social infrastructure for the whole city: returning public space for citizens, empowering daily uses on the streets and supporting walking connectivity. Moreover, it tries to increase green spaces and city’s permeability, and recovering natural soils.

In short, a kind public space, for daily life, that applies gender perspective and prioritize the needs of the most fragile people, such as children and the elderly.

In spite of the intervention area being restricted to the surroundings of Aliaga Square, a solution in two scales is proposed. At city’s scale, it proposes to develop a “civic axis” as an eco-social infrastructure that connects Aliaga Square to Vila-real’sMain Square. At a small scale, in Aliaga Square it is proposed a new unit space, naturalized and inclusive where a complex system of uses gather together making this space a complex place of life and interrelationships.

The ceramic material chosen is Flexbrick system, a “ceramic fabric” based on a galvanized steel mesh hatch with ceramic pieces of terracotta. This modular and flexibile system allows a preparation at factory and a fast placement on site. In addition to being an ideal pavement not only for the pace of road traffic but also for permeable area, varying its base and joint between the pieces.
